Eye Health Q & A

How often do adults need routine eye health exams?

Eye health exams are important for everyone, but the specific frequency varies according to your situation. In general, Eye Treatment Center recommends yearly eye exams for adults who want to maintain their vision and health in the best way possible.

For healthy adults

If you’re healthy, aren’t at risk for eye disease, and have no symptoms of eye problems, the American Academy of Ophthalmology® recommends a baseline exam at age 40, followed by regular exams according to your doctor’s recommendations.

Exams are particularly important after age 40 because that’s the time period when you’re most at risk for diseases like age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma. Many adults today have risk factors for these diseases.

For example, aging itself is a risk factor for macular degeneration. This often makes annual exams the best bet for early diagnosis and treatment.

For at-risk adults

If you don’t have any eye problems right now, but you’re at risk for ocular problems, you need annual exams, along with as-needed exams for new problems.

Systemic diseases like diabetes and hypertension can damage your eyes seriously, as can eye diseases like age-related macular degeneration, medications like prednisone or hydroxychloroquine, and a family history of eye disease, so it’s important to follow your doctor’s recommendations for regular exams.

If you have diabetes, it’s important to schedule a diabetic eye exam within five years of your Type 1 diagnosis or immediately after your Type 2 diabetes diagnosis. After that, you need yearly diabetic eye exams.

Eye Treatment Center customizes your eye care schedule according to your age, physical health, and risk.

How often do children need eye health exams?

Children need an eye health exam during infancy, and then if their doctor detects any ocular abnormalities, they need to see the ophthalmologist promptly. During school years, children should have visual acuity and ocular alignment exams every 1-2 years.

If children experience any eye health issues, they should see their Eye Treatment Center doctor immediately.

What types of special eye exams do you offer?

Eye Treatment Center offers exams for all kinds of specific needs, including problems like dry eyes, sudden vision changes, and eye trauma. If you wear glasses but want to use contact lenses, you need a special exam and fitting.
